    Calorifiers Explained

    What is a Calorifier?

A Calorifier is a storage container that has the capacity to generate heat from stored water. Calorifiers works by acting as a vessel that takes in a quantity of water and generates it into heat. As the water is generated into heat, it radiates to warm specific things. In a boiler for example, the calorifier heats the water using a coil, which then emits into the building as a heat source.

    What are Calorifiers made of?

The 'U' tubes are usually made from copper as it has a high thermal conductivity. The copper tubes often have an extended external surface, designed to increase the heat transfer surface. The tubes are joined to a tube plate, usually using a tube expanding tool.

What is a Calorifier used for?

A calorifier is used to heat water for either heating or DHW (Domestic Hot Water) system. They comprise of a vessel into which a tube bundle is bolted. Steam or hot water is circulated through the 'U' shaped tubes of the tube bundle, this gradually heats the water in the vessel. Calorifiers are used in buildings such as hospitals, schools, colleges, offices, public buildings etc.

    Calorifiers versus Plate Heat Exchangers

Calorifiers are steadily being replaced by plate type heat exchangers due to the smaller footprint and because quite often there is no need for a vessel as in the case of instantaneous hot water skids. Nevertheless, there are still many Calorifiers in service.
